If a pipe has just burst at your place, this is the 10-minute plan to follow while you wait for a plumber. A burst pipe at mains pressure doesn’t drip. It sprays, and it can soak two rooms before you’ve found a towel. In a burst pipe emergency, the first 10 minutes come down to one job: stopping the water.
Here’s the order we’d follow if it were our own house. Shut the water off at the meter, switch off the hot water, keep water away from anything electrical, take photos for insurance, then get a licensed plumber in Ipswich out to do the actual repair.
The first 10 minutes after a burst pipe, step by step
Minutes 0 to 2: turn off the water main at the meter
Your water meter is almost always at the front of the block near the boundary, in a small pit or just above the ground. On the street side of the meter there’s a valve, usually a tap handle or a lever. Turn the tap handle clockwise until it stops. If it’s a lever, turn it so it sits across the pipe instead of in line with it.
- If the valve is seized solid, don’t belt it with a hammer. Wrap a rag around it and use multigrips with slow, steady pressure.
- If the meter pit is full of dirt or green ants (very common around Ipswich), scrape it out with a trowel, not your hand.
- In a unit or townhouse, the valve may be in a meter bank by the driveway. Ask the body corporate where yours is now.
Minutes 2 to 4: switch off the hot water system
Switch an electric unit off at the switchboard, where the circuit is usually labelled “HWS” or “hot water”. For gas, turn the control dial to pilot or off. Heat pumps usually have their own isolator beside the tank.
Water from a split hot line can be over 60 degrees, so don’t skip this one. If the system won’t fire back up properly once the pipe is fixed, we can look after hot water system repairs on the same visit.
Minutes 4 to 6: keep water away from power points and the switchboard
This is the part of a burst pipe that actually hurts people. If water is pooling near power points, appliances or a power board on the floor, flick the main switch off at the switchboard. Don’t stand in water while you do it. If the switchboard itself is wet, stay well clear and call an electrician as well as a plumber.
Unplug what you can reach from dry ground and lift power boards off the floor.
Minutes 6 to 8: drain the pipes and catch what’s left
Open a cold tap at the lowest point of the house, usually the laundry tub or a garden tap outside. This drains the remaining water out of the lines so the leak slows to nothing. Put a bucket under the split.
If water has run through a ceiling and the plasterboard is bulging, poke a small hole at the lowest point with a screwdriver and catch the water in a bucket. A controlled drip beats the whole sheet coming down.
Minutes 8 to 10: take photos, then call a burst pipe plumber
Before you mop up, take photos and a short video on your phone. Get the split, the water on the floor and any ceiling stains. Insurers generally want to see the damage as it was.
Then make the call. Tell the plumber where the pipe is and whether it’s on the hot or cold side. That helps us turn up with the right fittings the first time.
Who fixes a burst water pipe: the street main or your side of the meter
Your water authority fixes bursts in the street main, and the property owner fixes anything between the meter and the house. If water is bubbling up through the footpath or road and your meter dial isn’t moving, it’s probably the main. Across Ipswich, Springfield and Brisbane that’s Urban Utilities on 13 23 64.
Brisbane City Council’s guide to water supply faults and leaks sets out which problems go straight to the water authority.
Your side includes the line under the front yard, where plenty of the bursts we see across Ipswich and Brisbane actually happen.
Why pipes burst in South East Queensland homes
We don’t get frozen pipes here. Bursts usually come from something slower.
- Old galvanised steel pipe that rusts from the inside until a pinhole lets go. It’s common in older homes across Ipswich and Brisbane’s inner west.
- High mains pressure. The plumbing standard AS/NZS 3500 caps supply pressure at 500 kPa for new installations, and some streets run higher. Without a pressure limiting valve, the joints take a beating.
- Water hammer, the bang when a washing machine valve snaps shut, which shakes fittings loose over time.
- Ground movement. Reactive clay soils around Ipswich and Springfield swell in the wet and shrink in the dry, and buried poly lines don’t always cope.
- Small leaks left too long. A weeping joint is often the warning before a split, so never ignore a minor leak.
What a burst pipe repair involves once we arrive
Most burst pipe repair jobs follow the same pattern. We find the split, cut out the damaged section and join in new pipe with crimp or compression fittings, depending on whether the line is copper or poly.
Then we turn the main back on slowly and watch the meter. If the dial is still creeping with every tap closed, there’s another leak somewhere, and we’d rather find it now.
For pipes inside a wall or under a slab, we’ll talk you through access options before any plaster gets cut. Pricing is upfront, so you know what the job costs before we start. Sebastian has more than 30 years on the tools, and the team offers same-day service across Ipswich, Springfield and Brisbane’s western suburbs.
For rental properties, we deal directly with property managers and real estate agents so the tenant isn’t stuck waiting on three phone calls before anyone turns up. Our rundown of the most common plumbing emergencies covers the other calls that can’t wait.
Get the water off, then give us a call
Plumbing done right starts with the water off at the meter. If you’ve got a burst pipe right now, shut it off and ring us on 1300 852 837. If it’s a weeping joint or a pipe that bangs every time the washing machine fills, book a quote and we’ll sort it before it turns into a 10-minute emergency of its own.
Burst pipe FAQs
What should be done if a pipe bursts?
Turn the water off at the meter first, then switch off the hot water system at the switchboard. After that, keep water away from power points, open a low tap to drain the lines, take photos of the damage for insurance and call a licensed plumber to repair the split.
How long does it take to fix a burst pipe?
A straightforward repair on an exposed pipe usually takes one to two hours once the plumber arrives. That covers cutting out the split, joining in new pipe and testing the line. Pipes inside walls or under slabs take longer because of the access work, and some of those jobs run to a full day.
Can you fix a burst pipe on your own?
No, not permanently. Self-fusing repair tape or a pipe clamp can slow the leak until help arrives, but the repair itself is plumbing work. The Queensland Building and Construction Commission’s licensing rules for plumbing work require a licence whatever the value of the job. A homemade joint that fails inside a wall costs far more than the original split.
Can I shower if there's a water main break?
Yes, as long as water is still coming through and your water provider hasn’t issued a water quality warning. Expect lower pressure. If the water runs cloudy or brown once supply returns, run the cold tap until it clears. When the burst is on your own pipe and the meter is off, the shower waits until the repair is done.
